AMD or Intel is like asking Pizza Hut or Marco's.

If you want more performance for your money, I would suggest AMD. I personally have used AMD for over 6 years and just recently built myself two Pentium 4 machines and I can tell you that it's not worth the money.

I would not say that AMD for gaming and Intel for applications because they both do.....both.

I personally would not spend the money for an AMD64 either. It serves no purpose. You can download XP 64-bit Edition, but for what? No software is designed to run on a 64-bit platform. You aren't going to get your money out of it for another year at least. Granted the AMD64 will work with 32-bit platforms/applications but the performance is not worth the money.

CRT monitors are definately the way to go for gaming. LCD's still have
not matched the Dot Pitch on CRT monitors.

If you DO chose to get an LCD, make sure the Response time is 20ms or lower, otherwise you will get ghosting.

Tell me your budget and I will tell you what I would build with that money.

with 3800 u can buy pretty much anything u want, 6800 ultra vid card, 2 19 inch lcds etc.
as to locking up thats usually a cooling problem, 4 case fans + copper sink are a must as is artic silver. consider liquid cooling since u can afford it and get temp sensors/fan controllers.
for a 3800 setup i would do
amd64 winchester core: any speed(they overclock really well)
dfi lanparty with the nforce4 sli chipset ( best mobo on the market)
2 gigs of 3-2-2 mushkin ddr2 ram
74 gig raptor for boot
2x250 seagate sata for storage in raid 0
2x6800 gt vid cards and oc them to ultra speeds
nec dvd burner
aluminum case (lian li is good)
kingwin water cooling kit
fans/cables/etc
keyboard/mouse
speakers
2x19 inch samsung lcds
