the real problem is that doomkins were never well thought out. The gear was never designed properly, and the way the doomkin aura works leads people to believe it should be viable in pve. The fact is, doomkins are battle mages. They need melee weapons with moderate damage, and gear with caster stats + armor and attack power to work the way they've been conceptualized.

Many people (non-druids) don't realize that doomkins have dire-bear armor, and have pretty much full time judgement of wisdom (which increases mana returns per blow based on melee attack power). Ideally, a doomkin with high spell damage/spell crit and high melee attack power would work as conceptualized. Plink like a paladin, drop insect swarm and moonfire spam, treants, Imp Faery fire, etc. The gear was not designed around the concept though and its nearly impossible to get the spec to work as intended by the designers. Its better than pre-bc though I suppose.

EDIT: Wow, Moonstone's wall of text crits thread for over 9000! To sum it up, Doomkins are somewhat like ret paladins and enhancement shamans had a baby...but people play them like they're elemental shamans.
