I have written a Strat guide on how to beat sleep.
First let me start out with the definition.
n.
A natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli. During sleep the brain in humans and other mammals undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming.
A period of this form of rest.
A state of inactivity resembling or suggesting sleep; unconsciousness, dormancy, hibernation, or death.
This is what has worked for me, it may vary depending on persons.
Prep
In order to maximize the time that you will be able to stay awake you have to plan you're "last" sleep for a while.
I have tried different time frames of sleep and the one that works best for me is 4 hours. This may vary depending on the person, I don't know. I've found that sleeping past 4 hours makes me more tired than if I slept 4.
Ok, This is going to be the first 24 hours of being awake.
Note: I worked 8 hours everyday during this so maybe someone else can go longer without sleeping than I did.
During the first day you are going to just go through it like normal pretty much. My strat is based around playing WoW, for activity.
Hints: Always be doing something that will keep you're brain busy but it has to be something that isn't the same all the time.
Playing music helps, if you're playing the right kind I guess.
Red Bull and Mountain Dew plus energy drinks are good boosters if you're starting to succumb to the evil of sleeping!
Eating - I would suggest not eating too much, I think this makes me more tired. I normally eat during a day a small breakfast (cereal or something to that effect), a sandwich for lunch, PIZZA for dinner. During nights at raiding, I munch on Goldfish or something like that, chips or whatever!
Ok so the raid is over and it's 1 am. What can I do now to keep me busy. For me I get bored of grinding, so I PVP. Always try to be active/talk on teamspeak/vent.
Try not to do any extracurricular activities that will fatigue you.
Ok so now it's about 6am, for me, it's time to get ready for work. So I take a shower yada yada, get to work at 7. This is the hard part of the day since you are doing all this shit and whatever but, you just have to get over it. When BC comes out i'm taking off work. Ok so when you get a break, drink 3 redbulls and eat a sandwich, dont eat too much or you will soak up your caffine intake. Alright now it's 5pm time to go home. On the way home get a 6 pack of red bull.
I always try to keep myself busy, reading forums, talking on TS, Gchat whatever. I like to yell at my computer really loud when I PVP, makes it more fun.
Ok so basically repeat all that stuff and go for as long as you can. If you think you're starting to get drowsy, stand up a minute. Maybe chug a red bull.
The more you practice not sleeping, the easier it becomes IMO.
--Side-effects --
by Day 3 you will be extremely fatigued.
The back of you're eyes will start hurting.
Muscles will hurt.
Late Day 3 starts the Hallucinations. You will just see something you don't know what it was but it will startle you.
Day 4 you will be pretty much Aloof. It's pretty much like, you're goign to be awake and dream at the same time. Whatever you're dreaming will be a hallucination around you and seem real in a "distant-like" way.
Uh i've never made it TO 5 days. What pretty much happens is you're eyelids become like led and you cant keep them open even if you try to hold them open. You eventually pass out.
I'll probly never try to go to 5 days really I dont see much use anymore, you pretty much will become retarded.
And i'm not sure but maybe you can die from not sleeping? I dont know.
If you want to try staying up for a long time, practice first. Do 2 days then try 3.
Well in conclusion, this is just my experience with not sleeping, maybe others have things they can share. Or more tips on staying awake. I'm not suggesting that anyone do this because I don't really know if it could cause health problems or not. /disclaimer.
