fraps is very cpu intensive. the only way you'll get amazing performance is with something like dual+ core or hyperthreading. Recording onto another HD does help but it all comes down to your cpu.

i have a AMD 3200+, 2GB ram, nVidia 7800 GTX, and 750 GB of space (spread over 4 hard drives) and i usually dont see better then 20 fps when i'm recording. of course when i'm not i usually hit 75+ fps

I'd take 20fps, Your system sounds almost identical to mine except for 4 hard drives... but I just don't care anymore, I'm going to try to find a program that gets me better fps. I refuse to believe everyone who makes a video has some kinda god machine.

i should add that you need a proper version of fraps that supports the newer nvidia cards (or something to that extent)

I don't have anything extraordinary in my machine. I'd even say that it's less than what a lot of people use. AMD64 3200+, 1GB ram, 2HDs (WoW being on a 5200rpm crap maxtor), and I still get about 20-30 fps when frapsing. It really really isn't that CPU intensive. It's the fact that when you fraps a video, it's not compressing it at all, so your HD is writing a TON of information. When they're on the same PCI bus, it's reading and writing all that information over basically a small pipeline. When you read from 1 bus, and write using another one, the load basically gets cut in half.

You don't need a killer machine to fraps effectively, it just takes a lot of tweaking with settings to get it to work according to your machine. Every piece of hardware is different, and different settings work different for every machine. It probably took me a solid week of trying every setting possible before I was finally able to up from 2-5fps. I suggest taking everyone's suggestions with a grain of salt, and just put in the time to figure out what works best for you.
