Hi again.
This whole thing represents several dark truths about WoW and MMORPGs. Not the least of which is the real confusion between the virtual world and the real world.
Also, while I recognize what SN did was disturbing I also must admit that their movie (as posted here) made me laugh...laugh very hard. Not because of what was in the movie so much but rather how the movie was made. It was hilariously made and appealed to my inner imp or gremlin (plus it was the Horde getting jumped and that pleased me as well). Its devilish hilarity reminds me of the following example:
Have any of you seen one of those sand-castle-building competitions? In one of those you have a bunch of people making the best sand castle they can make. Eventually a judge or judges come around to inspect all the castles. Imagine a judge coming up to one of those castles with its maker standing proudly next to it. Then imagine some yahoo come yelling and screaming then jumping all over the castle. Would you laugh if you saw this? Maybe. What if someone recorded all this on tape, edited the tape excellently, added music and maybe even a commentary and then you watched this movie? Would you laugh then? I think so. Hell I'd even pay cash money for that tape. Does that make the clown who destoryed the sand-castle a good person? No...but it shows he has a damn good sense of humor.
However my blame lies on the organizers of this funeral in addition to SN. If they prepared an Honor guard or some type of defense against such pricks then they could have prevented the utter defilement of their ceremony. Clearly the world is full of evil bastards and if you pretend they don't exist then you are setting yourself up to be taken advantage of. They also made the mistake of announcing the time and place of this ceremony on the open forums which was another tactical error.
My critisim is further emphazed by the sand-castle illustration in which their public funeral ceremony was like the sand-castle recking opportunity of a lifetime. This, coupled with that fact that on any given PvP server you have a booming population of "sand-castle reckers", equals a near 100% probablity that there will be a serious attempt to obliterate the "sand-castle".
And that is what these funeral planners allowed to happen. They planned on making a very elaborate "sand-castle". They publicly announced when and where they would make it. And they made no preparations to stop any would-be "sand-castle reckers"...they were asking for it. Especially if you consider the nature of the server and the type of people that play WoW. For some people that play WoW recking "sand-castles" is the funnest thing that they could ever do in the game and, lets be frank, this was the mother of all "sand-castles".
Not to take anything away from the seriousness of death. That is something that is so serious it can shake one right out of their fantasies. What I'd like to point out is this person who died had their life ended during a period of their life where they spent a good amount of their time in a fantasy world. Is that how you want to go out? Here's a hint: there is no such thing as rezing or using a spirt healer. You get one life (that we know of), that's it.
